Join chef David Hussey and photojournalist Lyric Lewin for a cooking and photography workshop!
At the beginning of the class, participants will learn to make pizza dough from scratch, build their own personal pizza and then Chef David will bake it in the outdoor wood-fired oven. While the dough is proving, students will receive instruction on food photography from Lyric.
Participants will learn how to incorporate lighting, composition, color theory and perspective into creating a food image. We will have one portion of the class working with styling ingredients, followed by a more photojournalistic style of training by taking images of the action in the cooking process.
Afterward, students will enjoy their pizza along with seasonal sides and homemade peach kombucha. Finally, students will make s'mores on the open fire, using giant homemade marshmallows.
Bring your DSLR or your smartphone and Lyric will assist with technical questions as well as help guide you towards unlocking your creativity. This class is for beginners, but will accommodate all skill levels.
About the instructors:
Chef David Hussey
David Hussey is an award-winning chef from Sheffield, UK, who lives with his wife Julie in Dade County, Georgia. Raised in a big city next to a national park, David grew up with a love of outdoors, bushcraft and cooking food in nature. David started his career with 15 years in restaurant kitchens in the UK and Sydney, Australia. His work led him to travel the world and explore many cultures, which have deeply informed his cooking style.
As his career developed, he moved to the corporate world as an executive chef, running kitchens in prestigious private schools in the UK, including Eton College, before moving to work in London as a chef in high-level corporate catering for investment banks and financial institutions. He earned recognition and awards for his performance in the industry as well as multiple gold medals in national culinary competitions.
David and Julie met in 2019 while they were both working in Beijing, China. After returning to their own countries and a gruelling, long distance covid relationship, David was granted a visa to move to NYC. The couple moved to Georgia in February of 2025 and David started Steel Pioneer Fire Cooking, a small cooking school. On their 7-acre rural property, he teaches people to cook like a chef on the wood fire, using local produce from the surrounding farms and community.
